We're updating PrayerMate: all you need to know

We've launched a new and improved version of PrayerMate, with the same familiar interface, plus under-the-hood upgrades for better data syncing between devices, and a stronger foundation for future updates.

What do I need to do?

The main thing you need to do is update PrayerMate on all your devices. The new version of PrayerMate can't sync data with devices still running the old version, because we've improved how data is stored. All your data will migrate to the new version of the app when you update, but changes you make won't be available on other devices until you update PrayerMate on those too.

For most users, you won't need to do anything else: we hope PrayerMate will simply continue to work fine for you.

However, because we've made such foundational changes to PrayerMate to secure its future, there's a small chance some users might experience issues with their data during the transition. Don't worry: in nearly all cases your data is still stored on the device and can be restored easily enough. If this is you, we apologise for the inconvenience: please make sure you do not uninstall the app, and read below.

Something is wrong with my data: help!

Firstly, don't panic and do not uninstall the app. Completely close and re-open PrayerMate. If that doesn't fix the issue, read on....

a) I don't have any data!

Open PrayerMate settings, go to 'Backup and restore', and then look for an item titled 'Legacy database.' This is your data from the old app, and if you tap on this, it will give you the option to restore your data.

If that doesn't work, or if you need some extra help with this, send us an email (ideally use the "Get in touch" button in the "Settings" page of the app, so that we get useful debug info about your device).

b) My photos / attachments are missing

Open PrayerMate settings, go to 'Backup and restore', and then look for an item titled 'Legacy database.' Tap it, and tap on 'Files'. This will show a list of photos and attachments recovered from the old app, and you can tap on them to re-attach them.

c) My data isn't syncing between my devices any more / I have different data on my devices

There are two things to check here:

  • Are all your devices signed into the same account in PrayerMate? Open the settings page and check that the email address displayed at the top is the same. It's possible that one of your devices simply isn't signed-in at all -- this is quite a common problem.
  • Is PrayerMate updated on all your devices? Devices running the new version of PrayerMate can't sync data with devices running the old version. An easy way to check if you're on the new version is to scroll to the bottom of the settings page -- if it has a version number like '9.1.3 (545)', it's the new version, and if it doesn't, it's an older version. If you're on Android and you don't have the option to update yet, and you need to update immediately rather than wait a few days, you can join the open beta here.

d) One or more groups I was in are no longer showing up

This update includes some changes to groups, which we are now rebranding as 'shared lists'. To continue using these, one of the administrators of your group needs to update to the new version of PrayerMate and then migrate the group using the instructions in the app. Once they've done that, it will show up in your app again.

I have a different problem with the new app

If your data is fine, but you're experiencing an issue with the new app, please let us know so we can fix it for everyone: we've done lots of testing, but there are always a few bugs that slip through the net! Please go to the app settings page, and tap the 'Get in touch' button to send us an email.

Changes to PrayerMate Share groups

Groups are becoming shared lists. These have nearly all the same features, but are more flexible and easier to set up. If you're currently in a PrayerMate group, your group admin will need to update their version of PrayerMate and then manually upgrade the group, for you to be able to see it in the new app. Once upgraded, everybody in the group will need to update to the new version to continue accessing it.
